Green Fingers and Colourful pots.

In 6th class we have been very busy over the past few weeks.

For science we have been conducting an experiment to determine what plants need to grow big and strong. To do this we had to get our hands dirty! We each took a pot and headed out to the playground in the sun. Everyone took turns to fill their pot with compost. We then placed in our broad bean seeds ensuring they were covered but not too deep. Returning to class, we placed all the pots in the sunniest part of the room; where they could get the most light and 2 children were picked every morning to water the beans. We also placed one test seed and pot in the cupboard and gave it water but it received no sunlight. Another test pot was placed with the other pots in the sun but received no water. Now all we had to do was wait.

While we were waiting we kept ourselves busy by designing and creating bigger, clay pots. After all our plants will need a new home once they are grown. We discussed many designs and eventually decided on one. To begin our construction we divided the clay equally between everyone in the class. We rolled the clay into “snakes”. These were then placed on one another to form the general shape of our pot. From there everyone had complete creative control of their project. They decided on the pots final shape, texture, design and colour. It has to be said that the creativity of 6th class is very evident!

While our pots were drying on the windowsill we inspected our broad beans. With great excitement we discovered that after just 4 days the broad beans had begun to sprout! On some we could even see the roots emerging from the bottom of the pots.

It wasn’t long until our plants were so large that a few needed support to stand up straight. It was time to transfer them from the basic, small, plastic pot into our new and funky colourful pots! Don’t they look fantastic!
